"The Anden" Project Summary
Breakaway Toowoomba is proposing an innovative accommodation service to support 24 hour a day sustainable housing tenancies for adults with disabilities whose parents or carers are ageing.
The service will be provided at “The Anden” a former seven (7) room Bed and Breakfast which offers exciting opportunities for independent living. Furthermore, there will be intentional linkages between the individual's day support or vocational programs.
This accommodation service offers a more cost effective way of supporting the above individuals by encouraging them to be as self-reliant as possible and in doing so develop their independent living skill and as well as enhance the individual's ability to remain fully part of their local community.
Key aims of the service:
- Respect the personal investment of the long-term of carers/parents of the residents
- To foster a true sense of "home". Such as providing a service that seeks to promote and appreciate the need for individuals to have a place where they can be themselves and feel comfortable, a place where they can expresses their personality and a place to be full of their personal relationship and social life. This is to be principally achieved through the involvement and consultation with the person's whose home it is.
- The creation of a vibrant new 'social hub'; connections between residents and the local community are built and strengthened; contacts with family and friends are promoted; social isolation is reduced.
- Enhance existing informal supports and networks. People do best when they can build on these networks, skills and capacities rather than having to start again from scratch.
- Build on the person's existing identity and life outside of the context of the accommodation.
